Bernard W. Whittington

Top Professional of the Year 2018

A graduate of West Virginia University, Mr. Whittington began his career at the Appalachian Power Company as a Power Engineer. In 1959, Mr. Whittington would serve Union Carbide’s Technical Center as a Lead Electrical Engineer. This would eventually lead to his position as Engineering Consultant with Carbide’s Chemicals and Plastics facility. In 1982, Mr. Whittington was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for “Leadership in Electrical Standards and Implementation.” That same year, he would serve as President of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Industry (IEEE) Applications Society.

Mr. Whittington has been honored with the I&CPS Achievement Award, the IEEE Centennial Medal, the IEEE Standards Medallion, and the Richard Harold Kaufmann Award for Outstanding Achievement in the field of Industrial Systems Engineering. Mr. Whittington has also served as Chairman for an IEEE Standards Subcommittee on Fire Hazard Assessment and Toxicity as well as chaired Code Panel No. 12 of the National Electrical Code. He has also served as Past Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Sissonville Public Service District, as well as past Chairman and current member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Sissionville. Now retired, Mr. Whittington opened his own consulting firm. He remains a registered engineer in West Virginia.
