John Y. Pai

Born in Seoul, Korea, Mr. Pai emigrated to the United States when he was 12 years old. Due to the political climate of Korea at the time, his parents returned to their homeland, leaving Mr. Pai with American family. From a young age, Mr. Pai has been drawn to all things artistic, recalling drawing the Korean countryside at a young age. In 1958, he received a four year scholarship to Pratt Institute where, although he studied Industrial Design, he felt a pull toward sculpture. Upon completion of his Bachelor’s degree, he traveled to Europe to study art. Mr. Pai would return to Pratt Institute after receiving a full time fellowship for his graduate work. During this time, he would begin teaching at Pratt Institute as well as the Parsons School of Design. Due to his dedication to his craft, Mr. Pai would become chairman of the undergraduate sculpture program at Pratt Institute in 1965. In 1974, Mr. Pai resigned as Director so that he could focus on his own artistic endeavors. Mr. Pai’s work has been featured on an international scale, with works being shown in Seoul, Paris, and New York. In his leisure time, Mr. Pai’s hobbies include playing the piano and tennis.
