James F. Buchanan

For over four decades, Mr. Buchanan has been a powerful force in the legal field. After completing a clerkship with the U.S. District Court in Corpus Christi Texas, Mr. Buchanan accepted a position with Kleberg Law Firm practicing maritime law. After thirty years, Mr. Buchanan and his partners formed Welder Leshin LLP in August of 2003.

Mr. Buchanan is well versed in maritime law, handling cases of all related matters. He has represented international oil companies, handling oil and gas lawsuits regarding royalty disputes, take-or-pay claims, and drainage claims. Mr. Buchanan’s experience is not limited to maritime law, having expertly represented cases of all variations of personal injury claims, including claims for contractual indemnities, insurance coverage issues, and cases against trucking companies. Mr. Buchanan is also experienced in the defense of toxic tort cases.

Professionally, Mr. Buchanan is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Corpus Christi Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Maritime Law Association of the United States (Proctor Member), the Houston Maritime Arbitration Association, and the Southeast Admiralty Law Institute. He has been admitted to practice in the United States District Court, Southern District of Texas, and the United States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit. Additionally, Mr. Buchanan is a certified mediator by the Center for Public Policy Dispute Resolution at The University of Texas School of Law.

In his leisure time, Mr. Buchanan enjoys spending time with his family, bird hunting, and playing golf.
